Description :
Ofloxacin is a synthetic chemotherapeutic antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone drug class considered to be a second-generation fluoroquinolone.
Pharmacology :
Ofloxacin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. It functions by inhibiting DNA gyrase, a type II topoisomerase, and topoisomerase IV, which is an enzyme necessary to separate replicated DNA, thereby inhibiting cell division.
Dosage :
Instill 1-2 drops into affected eye (s) every 4 hrs.The duration of treatment depends upon the severity of infection and the usual duration is 7 to 14 days.
Contraindications :
Ofloxacin is also considered to be contraindicated within the pediatric population, pregnancy, nursing mothers, patients with psychiatric illnesses and in patients with epilepsy or other seizure disorders. Ofloxacin is to be avoided in patients with a known hypersensitivity to ofloxacin or other quinolone drugs.
How to use :
To apply eye drops, wash your hands first. To avoid contamination, do not touch the dropper tip or let it touch your eye or any other surface. Remove contact lenses before applying the eye drops. Wait at least 10 minutes after using OFlotas before inserting contact lenses.
Precautions :
1. Do not use ofloxacin ophthalmic if you have a viral or fungal infection in your eye. It is used to treat infections caused by bacteria only.
2. It is not known whether ofloxacin ophthalmic will harm an unborn baby. Do not use ofloxacin ophthalmic without first talking to your doctor if you are pregnant.
3. It is also not known whether ofloxacin ophthalmic passes into breast milk. Do not use ofloxacin ophthalmic without first talking to your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
